League play takes center stage tonight, as the fourth week of the high school football season is highlighted by the beginning of conference play for many area schools.
The weekend schedule also includes several non-conference clashes between perennial powerhouses and backyard rivals.
Girard (3-0) begins its defense of the Northeast 8 Conference (NE8) championship when the Indians travel to Struthers (0-3). The high-powered Indians have outscored their three opponents this year by a combined score of 142-20.
Girard enters the game with a 15-game regular-season winning streak, the ninth-longest active streak in Ohio. Girard is one of nine area schools entering the weekend with a 3-0 record.
Girard hasn't been shut out in 270 games, a streak that began on Oct. 1, 2000.
South Range (3-0) is looking to regain the top spot in the NE8, which it held for five straight years from 2020 to 2024. The Raiders host Lakeview (1-2), which picked up its first win of the season last week at Jefferson.
South Range had won 38 consecutive league games before falling to Poland and Girard in back-to-back weeks last September.
Niles and Hubbard each picked up their initial win of the season a week ago. Now, the Red Dragons and Eagles will look to build on that momentum as the two teams meet at Hubbard Memorial Stadium.
The Eagles and Red Dragons are meeting for the 41st time in a series that began in 1919. Hubbard owns a slight 22-17-1 edge in the series, but the Eagles have dominated recently, winning 18 of the last 19 meetings.
McDonald (3-0) has won 14 straight regular-season games, which includes a perfect run through the Mahoning Valley Athletic Conference Scarlet Tier in 2025. The Blue Devils will look to continue their streak when they open league play at Campbell (2-1).
Mineral Ridge (3-0) is the only other Scarlet Tier team without a loss. The Rams will host Springfield (1-2), which owns a 37-3 league record since the MVAC formed two tiers in 2020. During the six-year span, the Tigers won three outright league titles and shared a fourth title.
Garrettsville Garfield has been a force since joining the MVAC Gray Tier in 2021. The G-Men own a 32-2 record in the MVAC, with three conference titles in five years. After surrendering its title to Crestview a year ago, Garfield will look to regain its throne this year, in what is the final season for the MVAC Gray Tier.
Tonight, Garfield (3-0) will host LaBrae (2-1).
Meanwhile, Crestview (1-2) will begin its defense of the league title with a home game against Liberty (3-0).
Howland will face a stern test in its first-ever league game as a member of the Eastern Buckeye Conference. The Tigers - 3-0 for the first time since 2014 - travel to Beloit to take on West Branch.
West Branch (3-0) hasn't lost a game to an Eastern Buckeye Conference opponent since it fell to Alliance in the final game of the 2019 season. Since then, the Warriors have won 32 consecutive league games and six straight league titles.
Salem, also 3-0, will play host to Alliance (1-2).
Tonight's non-conference slate is highlighted by the 81st edition of the Battle of 224 as Poland (1-2) travels to Canfield (0-3).
The two teams first met in 1921 as eight-man football teams. They began playing as 11-man teams in 1944 and have played continuously with the exception of 2019 and 2020.
Poland leads the series 41-36-3, but Canfield has won eight of the last nine meetings.
A pair of schools with a combined 12 state championships will meet tonight when Cardinal Mooney (2-1) hosts Steubenville (3-0). The Cardinals and Big Red are meeting for the 16th time, with Big Red owning a slight 8-7 edge in the series. Steubenville defeated Mooney each of the last three years, including a 27-24 overtime win a year ago.
Warren G. Harding (2-1) will look to win its third straight game when it hosts Massillon Jackson (1-2). Fitch (1-1) hosts Maple Heights (1-2) before the Falcons begin a stretch where they will play three Pennsylvania teams (Butler, Erie, McDowell) in a span of four weeks.
The eight-man schedule features an all-local matchup between Chalker and Sebring. Both schools are seeking their first win of the season.
