CORTLAND — It had been eight years since the Howland boys track team called itself the Trumbull County champs.
After nearly six hours of competition, the Tigers might have clinched their first county title in nearly a decade on Thursday at Lakeview High School. There was one slight problem, however.
The Trumbull County meet results were usually posted right next to the concession stand in previous years. This year, the results were online, with only a QR code in their normal spot. And there were three events that were still unofficial as of 11:30 p.m.
So by that time, Howland’s official point total was 103. Warren G. Harding (79) was second, Mineral Ridge (65) was third, McDonald (63) was fourth and Lakeview (49) was fifth.
Howland’s Gianmarco Mavasi was timed at 14.72 as the 110 hurdles winner, and he took the 300 hurdles with 41.36. The Tigers also had the top finishers in the pole vault, with Carter Nielsen (9-00.00) winning and Mayson Thompson (8-00.00) ending as the runner-up.
The Tigers ended the championships with a 3:31.52 from Riley Hornbeck, Logan King, Levi Armitage and Jackson Mickel in the 4×400 relay.
That capped the Tigers’ day, finishing with their first county championship in eight seasons. Or at least they think so.
The girls end of the meet saw a lot more competition on the team scoreboard, and the scores were all official just before midnight. Girard, Howland and McDonald girls were separated by six points with six events still left to finalize.
The Indians were five points ahead of McDonald with one event still left to make official. But the Blue Devils fought back to win the girls championship with 86 points.
Girard was the runner-up with 83 points. Mineral Ridge (70) was third, Howland (69) was fourth and Lakeview (57) was fifth.
McDonald’s 4×800 relay, consisting of Juliana Krumpak, Selah Sheesley, Addison Callow and Analisa Jasso, took first with a 10:13.89. Sheesley also took home the top spot in the 800 after going 2:30.56.
In the field for the Blue Devils, Cierra Shiley won the shot put with an attempt of 38-07.75, and Emma Bundy got the discus with 126-01.

The team of Jakyia Hopkins, Avery Chambers, Khloe Pieton and Nevaeh Clinkscale combined for a 1:50.35 as Girard won the 4×200. Another Indian relay win came in the 4×100, when Laiyah Pappa, Gregory, Pieton and Riley ran 49.41. And finally, Hopkins, Adira Peterman, Chambers and Amirra Banks ended the night with a 4:19.89 to claim the 4×400.
Individually, Riley (12.64) bested Gregory (12.75) to win the 100 for the Indians.
Kennedy’s Annie Phillips picked up two wins, the first of which being in the 400 by running 1:00.12, and the second came in the 200 after posting a 26.42.

Bre’Asia McMillan picked up a win for Warren G. Harding with a 16.09 in the 100 hurdles.
Newton Falls had a winner as Lalia Waite and Howland’s Sophia McGarrity tied with 7-6.00 in the pole vault, but Waite got it on her first try to take first.
Melody Richards and Mackenzie Edgar took the top two spots in the 3200. Richards (12:03.52) won, and Edgar (12:03.55) was immediately behind.
Chalker’s win came when Abby Grimm recorded a 15-09.00 in the long jump.
Also in the jumps, Hubbard’s Khamyah Howell and McDonald’s Halle Kuntz both attempted 5-00.00 in the high jump, but Howell won it on attempts.
BOYS
Harding’s quartet of Ki’yan Patterson, Derrick Luton, Antonio Dukes and Matthew Richardson posted a 1:30.58 to take the 4×200. Patterson added an individual win after clocking a 50.82 in the 400.
Richardson also won the long jump with a leap of 20-08.50. And teammate Ellis Daniels won the shot put with a 56-03.00.
Lakeview’s Noah Engle won the 100 with a 10.77 and had a 22.41 for first in the 200.
Maplewood’s team of Micah Sparks, Ethan Nevinski, Tyler McPeak and Andrew Donaldson won the 4×800 with an 8:12.91. Donaldson (1:59.33) also had the top time in the 800.
Joey Cappuzzello had the first win for McDonald boys, winning the 1600 with a 4:33.89.
The Indians and Lakeview both ran 44.52 in the 4×100, but Girard took first place by a fraction of a second.
