Curbstone honors YSU track and cross country teams
BEAVER TOWNSHIP — The college track season is nearing its end. And on Monday at Avion Banquet Center in Beaver Township, Youngstown State track coach Brian Gorby recounted the program’s success during the 2025-26 academic year to the Curbstone Coaches.
A special moment happened on May 10. The YSU men and women won their respective Horizon League championship. That alone isn’t too surprising with the Penguins’ dominance over the years, but it helped lock up a year-long achievement.
With both YSU squads winning, the Penguins swept the men’s and women’s cross country, indoor and outdoor titles.
“Six for six championships is pretty cool, never done before,” Gorby said. “The program continues to climb as a result of this incredible staff.”
The men’s track program won its seventh straight Horizon League outdoor championship. Meanwhile, the women claimed their 17th Horizon League crown, marking their second consecutive title and the 11th in the past 12 meets.
After the meet, YSU’s Tori Atkins was named the conference’s Freshman of the Year among the runners.
“We’ll do everything in the world for each other,” Gorby said. “We all understand that, and I think that’s the great part about this program. Everybody lifts everybody up.”
Men’s cross country became the first team to win four straight league titles. Additionally, the women won their first league championship since winning back-to-back titles in 2013 and 2014.
For the indoor season, the men won the conference for the 11th consecutive season, tying Notre Dame’s record for consecutive HL indoor championships. And the women claimed their second straight crown and their ninth in the last 10 years.
In his 32 seasons leading the Penguins, Gorby has amassed 70 conference championships. Sixty-two of those came in the Horizon League and the remaining eight were when the Penguins competed in the Mid-Continent Conference.
“We’ve won 70 championships, but it’s about this year’s team,” Gorby said. “Goung six for six is just incredible.”
Members of the YSU track teams will compete in the NCAA East Regional Preliminaries on May 27-30 in Lexington, KY.
Monday’s meeting was the final official Curbstone Coaches meeting for the year. If there are any high school State champions during the spring tournaments, an additional meeting will be held during the summer.
