HOWLAND — The Howland boys volleyball team is getting accustomed to winning.
The Tigers continued to add to the win column on Thursday at Howland High School, picking up a 3-0 victory over Kenston to extend their win streak to seven straight.
“They’re banking on the experience that they’ve been working on for the past three or four years,” Amanda Florek said. “So their experience is coming in when we’re playing other inexperienced teams.”
Wesley Fee had 10 kills and two blocks for the Tigers (11-3). Carter Jones added eight kills, eight digs and a team-high 14 points, Evan Neely had a team-high 19 assists with three aces and Freddie Rivera finished with a team-best 18 digs and seven points.
The Tigers took the first two sets 25-22 and 25-7, respectively. But while they won in a one-sided affair in the second, the third was closer to the first.
The Bombers had a four-point lead multiple times in the third frame. So the Tigers methodically chipped away at the deficit, and an ace from Fee tied it at 15.
Howland took a 17-16 lead off a Nicholas Caesar ace, and the Tigers eventually ballooned their lead to 20-16.
Kenston came back to tie it at 20, 21 and again at 22. But the Tigers ended the set with a kill by Fee, taking the third 25-23 and completing the sweep.
“It’s amazing, because it really shows that we can come together,” Fee said of the third set. “There’s a lot of new kids playing that haven’t played the game of volleyball before, and for me, it’s only my fourth year. But it’s a lot of growing the team, growing the chemistry. It’s fun when you’re doing it with these guys.”
Winning sets has been a common sight for the Tigers. After Thursday’s match, they have won 15 straight.
“It wasn’t expected, so I’m not even keeping track of it,” Florek said of the success in recent sets. “We’re just one match at a time at this point.”
Howland’s first season of boys volleyball was 2023. Last year’s team had the program’s best campaign, finishing with an 11-13 record.
Now the Tigers have tied that victory mark, and they’ll look to continue adding to it before the tournament begins in early May.
“Coming into this year, I definitely believed we were gonna win a lot of games,” Fee said. “All summer, we were thinking this is our year. … I don’t think any of us thought we were gonna be 11-3, like we are right now. But I think we’re gonna win a bunch more games.”
