Reversal in the rematch

CORTLAND — Last month, when Poland and Lakeview met in Poland, the home team proved dominant in a 58-29 win. On Monday, with the venue flipping to Cortland, the results flipped as well.
Utilizing its aggressive full-court press defense and feeding off an energetic senior night home crowd, Lakeview overwhelmed the visiting Bulldogs to secure a crucial 58-39 victory in the Northeast 8 (NE8) Conference.
“We were really excited to play these guys on senior night,” Lakeview head coach Jason Lee said. “I know a lot of teams, they might not schedule somebody that rough on senior night, but we were so excited because Poland is a great program, they’re extremely well-coached with Nick [Blanch], and for us to come in here and play that kind of defense really makes me happy. It’s fantastic.”
Lakeview immediately showed Monday that it would be a much different game than last month’s matchup; the home ‘Dogs scored 10 straight points and held Poland scoreless through the first four minutes of the game. Although Poland managed to rip off seven straight of its own, Lakeview’s defense buckled down again and Poland without a field goal for the final three minutes of the opening quarter, at the end of which Lakeview led 17-9.
The second quarter, despite a passionate speech by Blanch between periods, proved no better for the visitors.
It took nearly two-and-half minutes for Poland to score its first field goal of the period, and only one more would follow, as Lakeview’s defense tightened and led to numerous Poland turnovers. Lakeview took a 27-13 lead into halftime.
Poland put together its best quarter of the game following halftime, outscoring Lakeview 14-11 and momentarily trimming the deficit to single digits for the first time since early in the second period.
However, Lakeview, which took a 11-point lead into the fourth, again clamped down defensively and kept Poland from closing in for the rest of the game. Lakeview outscored Poland 20-12 in the final quarter.
“They did a great job. They came out, they played well, they shot well,” Blanch said of Lakeview. “It just wasn’t our night, and that happens. Long seasons, you’ll have your ups and your downs. Still proud of the kids, though. They played hard most of the game, came out a little sluggish. I think the atmosphere here took us back a little bit, but credit to Lakeview; they packed it in, they made their senior night special and they got the win.”
Mackenzie Stowe finished the night with a game-high 25 points, including three 3-pointers, and was primarily aided by Kalyssa Werner, who had 14 points. Briella Rowe scored a team-high 14 for Poland, which also benefited from 9 points by both Bristol Rowe and Leanna Boccieri.
Poland (12-6, 7-3 NE8) had won six of its last seven entering Monday. The Bulldogs, who are now 1.5 games back from first-place Girard in the conference, play at Niles on Thursday before facing the Indians on the road next Monday.
With the win, its fifth straight, Lakeview improved to 12-6 on the season and 7-3 in league play. The Bulldogs travel to Girard on Thursday for a pivotal game in the conference title race.
