Two more golf state championships came to a close on Monday. And with it, the Mahoning Valley's high school season on the links closed as well.

The Division II boys and girls champions were crowned at Firestone Country Club. Archbishop Alter took the boys' championship, and Columbus Academy won the girls' crown.

Alter ran away with a two-day score of 598 after opening play Sunday with a 308 and cut 18 shots off for Monday, coming out of Day 2 with a 290. Alter finished 26 strokes ahead of Ottawa Hills' runner-up performance of 624.

Poland was the lone local team, finishing eighth with a score of 671. The Bulldogs had a 344 on Sunday and improved with a 327 for the second round.

Sophomore Matthew Morrone led the Bulldogs by shaving off nine strokes from his opening score. He shot an 85 on Sunday, but he cut that down to a 76 on Monday for a final score of 161. His performance was good enough for 18th overall.

Classmate Angelo Rinadli shot an 83-79-162 to tie with Lakeview senior Jason Demonica (85-77-162) for 21st. Fellow Poland sophomore Ryan Lombardo had an 87-84-171 to tie for 45th, and the final official Poland score went to junior AJ Battagla, who had a 58th-place finish after carding an 89-88-177. While not part of the four-golfer scoring, junior Zach Orlin finished 70th with a 103-90-193.

On the girls' side, Columbus Academy came away with the title, scoring a 668. It was seven strokes ahead of Maderia's 695.

No Mahoning Valley teams competed, but Cardinal Mooney's Katie Pregibon represented the area as an individual. The junior Cardinal ended her day at Firestone with a 36th-place finish. She shot 91 to open play on Sunday, but she shot 99 on Monday for a 190.
