Spring athletes deserve recognition

While we wait for word from the Ohio High School Athletic Association on the fate of high school spring sports in Ohio, the Tribune Chronicle / Vindicator sports department has decided to begin publishing our spring sports preview stories and capsules.

We regularly publish at the start of each season feature stories on some of the teams expected to have good seasons or that are coming off of excellent seasons. We also publish preview capsules from every team — provided the coach sent us the information.

We had begun preparation for this endeavor by sending out in mid-February forms to all the area athletic directors. The ADs were asked to pass on the forms to their spring sports head coaches. We received the information back from a good number of coaches, but held off publishing them — normally we start the weekend the season begins, which was last weekend this year — until we found out whether or not spring sports would be played this year.

With no word yet from the OHSAA, we decided to go ahead with our spring sports preview package anyway. If the season eventually is canceled, our stories and capsules can be looked at as “What might have been” coverage. If the season goes on in an abbreviated fashion, we already will have presented the information to our readers.

The most important thing, in our eyes, is that the high school student-athletes at least get some recognition, whether or not they play this year.

We plan on publishing stories and capsules on spring sports teams over the next three weeks or so, beginning today (Page C2).

We will send out this weekend another copy of the preview form to athletic directors to distribute to coaches. Coaches should return them as soon as possible so we can prepare them for publication. Information about how to get the forms to us is printed on the form.

We also would like to keep our readers up to date on the status of nonschool summer sports. We are asking those in charge of leagues — youth or adult; baseball, softball, golf, tennis, soccer, etc. — to let us know the status of their particular league. We can run cancellation or postponement information with our area notices that run periodically in our scoreboard section. Simply email the information to sports@tribtoday.com or fax it to 330-841-1717.
