Scrappers blanked by Yankees

STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. — Carlos Vargas had an excellent start squandered by no run support as the Mahoning Valley Scrappers lost their seventh straight game in a 1-0 defeat to the Staten Island Yankees on Sunday.

Vargas (3-4) had five strikeouts and gave up one run and two hits in seven innings.

Staten Island (26-22) scored the game’s only run in the first inning as Josh Smith’s sacrifice fly drove in Ezequiel Duran from third. Duran tripled earlier in the bottom of the first inning.

The Scrappers (22-27) were limited to a Joab Gonzalez single in the top of the fifth inning.

Mahoning Valley begins a six-game homestand tonight with a three-game series against West Virginia, starting at 7:05 p.m.
