Scrappers win in the ninth
AUBURN, NY — A recent addition to the Mahoning Valley Scrappers, Joab Gonzalez, homered in the ninth inning to lift the Scrappers past Auburn, 4-3, on Saturday night.
Down one run in the ninth with one out and one on base, Gonzalez hit a ball to left field that cleared the fence and sent Billy Wilson and himself home. Wilson got on base by getting hit by a pitch from Doubledays closer Jordan Bocko.
Gonzalez ended the night with two hits and two RBIs.
Everything was coming up Auburn early in the game. The Doubledays struck in the first and third innings.
Johnathan Rodriguez put the Scrappers on the board in the fifth inning with a two-run home run that tied the game. Rodriguez also ended with two hits and two RBIs.
On the mound was Ethan Hankins who struck out two and allowed four hits. Picking up the win was Gregori Vasquez. Vasquez threw five strikeouts across three hitless innings.
The Scrappers (22-20) sit in third place in the Pinckney Division behind Batavia and West Virgina. The Scrappers return home on Tuesday for a three-game series against Aberdeen.
