Scrappers open home campaign after 6-3 loss

GRANVILLE, W.Va. — The Mahoning Valley Scrappers are scheduled to play their 2019 home opener tonight at 6:35 against the Batavia Muckdogs, and they will do it as a .500 team.

The Scrappers dropped to 1-1 on the season Saturday night after losing at West Virginia, 6-3.

Mahoning Valley took a 2-1 lead in the top of the fourth inning on solo home runs by George Valera and Bryan Lavastida.

The Black Bears tied the game with a run in the sixth, then went ahead with two scores in the seventh, the latter on a wild pitch by Mahoning Valley’s Luis Valdez.

West Virginia’s first run, in the third inning, came on a passed ball by Lavastida.

The Scrappers cut the deficit to 4-3 in the eighth, but could have done more damage. MV loaded the bases in the inning, but scored the lone run on a forceout.

West Virginia came back in the bottom of the eighth with two insurance runs, scoring on a sacrifice fly, then using two Scrapper errors to tally the final run of the game.

Lefthander Francis Cespedes was the Scrappers’ most effective pitcher, striking out five while yielding one hit, one walk and one run in two innings.

Liam Jenkins started and pitched into the fourth, walking three and striking out three.

Three Scrappers had two hits as Mahoning Valley outhit the Black Bears on the night, 9-8.

Cody Farhat, Lavastida and Henderson DeOleo all had two base hits for the Scrappers.

Tonight’s home opener features a fireworks show after the game as Mahoning Valley begins the season looking for its third straight Pinckney Division crown in the New York-Penn League.
