Phantoms players popular in recent NHL draft

It was a big day during the NHL Draft for the Youngstown Phantoms on Saturday with three roster players and one affiliate player selected.

Starting off the day was Phantoms affiliate player Jordan Harris getting selected by the Montreal Canadiens in the third round, 71st overall. Harris played five games for the Phantoms this season tallying one assist.

Harris spent the majority of this season in high school, at Kimball Union Academy, where he tallied 35 points (6 goals, 29 assists) in 37 games. The left handed defenseman is off to Northeastern this season to play for the Huskies.

Up next was Phantoms star goalie Ivan Prosvetov. The Russian netminder was selected 114th overall by the Arizona Coyotes in his second year of draft eligibility.

Prosvetov was the anchor for the Phantoms throughout the season, including the playoffs, posting a .913 save percentage in his 36 regular season games, and a .921 in his 11 playoff games.

Prosvetov is a large presence in net at 6-feet-5 and his draft stock shot up the board due to his impressive playoff performance. He was ranked the 63rd overall best prospect by HockeyProspect.com.

It’s undetermined where he’ll spend next season playing. He has a high ceiling and has the potential to be a starter or very good backup if developed properly.

When asked earlier in the year who he thought was the best fit for him, Curtis Hall said the Boston Bruins. The Bruins thought so as well, selecting the Chagrin Falls native 119th overall in the fourth round.

The 6-foot-3 center scored 31 points (13 goals, 18 assists) in 54 regular season games and is off to Yale. Hall is projected to be a bottom six center who can contribute on offense.

The Coyotes raided the Mahoning Valley once more, selecting defenseman Michael Callahan at 142nd overall. Callahan was traded to the Phantoms midway through the season from the Central Illinois Flying Aces where he saw 37 games, finishing the regular season with Youngstown. Callahan scored 18 points (3 goals, 15 assists) in his 59 games this past season.

Callahan is committed to Providence College where he’ll start in the fall. He is projected to be a depth piece for the Coyotes who have a solid selection of young defensive talent in their prospect pool.

On Friday night, Phantoms affiliate Jay O’Brien was selected in the first round, 19th overall. O’Brien played five games with the Phantoms over two seasons. O’Brien is headed to Providence College where he’ll play with former Phantom Callahan.

O’Brien brings the total tally to three roster players and two affiliate players selected. With the deep playoff run and successful draft season, Youngstown continues to grow its foothold in the hockey world.

Starting at $3.23/week.
