Sponsors Classic Golf Association is entering its 41st season and is looking for new members into the organization.

The SCGA is a USGA licensed member club using handicaps based on the USGA system for handicapping. All Tournaments are played at 100 percent handicap, unless noted.

To be a part of the SCGA, one must pay memebership dues of $20 and entry fee for each tournament. Another option is $65, which includes memebership dues and all tournament except the two optional tournaments.

Howland High School looking for HOF nominees

The Howland High School Activities Department is accepting nominees for its Athletic Hall of Fame Class of 2014.

Nominating forms are now available in the high school activities office. Nominations will be accepted until May 14.

The new Hall of Fame members will be introduced at the Toledo Bowsher football game Friday, Sept. 26. The induction ceremony will place Saturday, Sept. 27 at Dilucia’s Banquet Hall.

CRANBERRY HILLS LADIES GOLF LEAGUE is accepting new members. A round-up meeting will be held at 1 p.m. on Thursday at the Cranberry Hills Club House. THE CANFIELD GOLF LEAGUE is looking for new members for the 2014 season that opens on April 23 at Flying B Golf Course. The league has been in operation for 50 years and plays on Wednesday nights. The league is unique because the members do not play head-to-head every week, instead golfers are assigned to teams and the low net scores are used to compute points that are awarded for that week. THE OHIO FURY SOFTBALL PROGRAM will hold Star Spangle Shootout ASA Eastern Qualifier Girls Softball Tournament on July 4 through July 6 at KC Geiger Park in St. Mary, Ohio. THE FOURTH ANNUAL BATTING FOR LYDIA FASTPITCH SOFTBALL TOURNAMENT for 10U, 12U and 14U recreational and travel ball teams will be held on May 24. Volleyball camps

HUBBARD HIGH SCHOOL is announcing its two volleyball camps for this summer. The first is the Hubbard Instructional camp, which will be held from June 9 through 11 from 9 a.m. to noon for girls in second through ninth grades. The cost is $50. The second camp is the Shenango Valley Volleyball camp, being held June 23 and 24 for girls in fifth through 12th grades. The camp will be held from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. and is $65. The camp staff will include college and high school coaches, college players and former elite high school players. Running events

THE SECOND ANNUAL ORWELL SPRING FEVER 5K/1-MILE RUN will be held May 10. The event is sponsored by the Country Neighbor Program, Inc. and the Orwell Volunteer Fire Department Auxiliary of the Village of Orwell. Registration prior to April 30 is $20 and those runners are guaranteed a T-shirt and a tote bag. For those taking part in same-day registration, the registration fee will be $30 and will have T-shirts available on a first, come first serve basis. The 5K will begin at 8 a.m. and the 1-mile run will begin at 8:30 a.m. with an awards ceremony to follow. Award medals will be given for the overall top three finishers as well as the top three in of the following age groups: 14 and under; 15 to 19; 20 to 29; 30 to 39; 40 to 49; 50 to 54; 55 to 59; 60 to 64; 65 to 69; 70 to 74; 75 to 80; and 81-and-over. Registration forms can be found on the Village of Orwell’s website at or may be picked up from Country Neighbor, 39 South Maple Street, in Orwell.

OHSAA releases academic teams

The Ohio High School Basketball Coaches Association released its Academic All-Ohio teams as well as the five teams in the state with the highest GPAs.

Locally, LaBrae’s Peyton Aldridge was named to the Division III team. Along with averaging 21.4 points per game, he recorded a 3.95 GPA.

On the girls’ side, Pymatuning Valley’s Geena Gabriel was named to the Division III team with her 3.73 GPA. Gabriel averaged 18.3 points per game for the Lakers this year. Also, PV’s team had the fourth highest GPA in the state with a 3.887.

Ridge’s Davidson chooses JCU

Kyle Davidson of Mineral Ridge, son of Russell and Shelli Davidson, has decided to continue his academic and athletic career at John Carroll University.

While a part of the Rams’ football team, he started on the offensive and defensive line, was team captain and made the All-County team.

While playing football at John Carroll, he plans to major in business marketing and currently has a 3.2 GPA.

Trumbull County graduating seniors who are T.C.T.A. members and have played varsity tennis are eligible for this scholarship. Consideration also is given to non Trumbull County students who are T.C.T.A. members and have participated in T.C.T.A. tournaments.

Chalker Alumni Game on April 12

The Chalker Athletic Hall of Fame’s annual alumni basketball game is scheduled for Saturday.

Again, this year, the women will tip off at 6 p.m. with the men to follow.

This event is held at the Chalker gymnasium on state Route 534.
