John Simon may have fallen into the perfect scenario.

In the fourth round of Saturday’s NFL Draft, Baltimore Ravens General Manager Ozzie Newsome, who is renowned for his eye for pro football talent, landed another possible piece in the team’s revamped linebacking corps.

Simon, a Youngstown native and former Ohio State University standout, was more than the prototypical outside linebacker and defensive end.

The 6-foot-2, 257-pound 2009 Cardinal Mooney High School wreaked havoc on the Big Ten, being named the Conference’s Defensive Player of the Year last season – despite a knee injury that kept the tenacious defender to 11 games. He had 44 tackles, 14.5 tackles for loss and a career-high nine sacks in his senior campaign at OSU.

The Baltimore Ravens’ web site published that Simon is now back at 100-health.

Simon joined a loaded group in the Ravens’ defensive middle with Terrell Suggs, Elvis Dumervil, Courtney Upshaw, Albert McClellan and Pernell McPhee.

Mooney coach P.J. Fecko said Simon will be up to the challenge in the Baltimore 3-4 defense designed by coordinator and former Kent State University coach Dean Pees.

“I think definitely the first day he walks in there into one of those sessions he’s going to bring competition, that’s for sure,” Fecko said. “He’s somebody that loves it and thrives in competition and is going to make people around him better. I think he’s going to be very successful at this level.”

Simon wasn’t the only Mooney player to latch on with an NFL team. Penn State fullback Michael Zordich (6-1, 236) was signed as a free agent with the Carolina Panthers.

“He’s a person who’s a tremendous football player, a great person that is extremely to John – very, very aggressive, high motor, plays with a lot of energy and intensity and has all of those intangibles to play at the next level – given the right fit,” Fecko said.

“He’s a very versatile player, special teams-wise. Every single special teams you can imagine, he can fit into. He catches the ball well. He’s a good blocker. He can do a lot of different things well and I think it’s going to work out for him.”

Zordich’s father, Mike, was a ninth-round pick by the San Diego Chargers in 1986. He played for the New York Jets, Arizona Cardinals and Philadelphia Eagles and recently coached on Andy Reid’s staff with the Eagles before Reid took the head coaching job with the Kansas City Chiefs. The older Zordich is also a Chaney High School graduate.

The younger Zordich and Simon aren’t the only two current NFL players from Mooney.

Kyle McCarthy, who orchestrated the 2004 Division IV state championship run for the Cardinals, was picked up as an undrafted free agent by the San Diego Chargers in 2010. McCarthy, a University of Notre Dame graduate, is trying to come back from a recurring knee injury that placed him on the injured reserve from 2012 season.

Then, there is Ishmaa’ily Kitchen, who plays on the defensive line for the Cleveland Browns. Kitchen, a Kent State University product, was signed by the Ravens as an undrafted free agent in 2012.

As for Zordich and Simon, both went to school at St. Christine School in Youngstown and eventually moved on Mooney.

“Everything that’s being mentioned about these guys is work ethic, desire, great people – all those kind of things,” Fecko said. “And those are the kind of intangibles that are in the parochial education. They have reaped the benefits of our football program at Cardinal Mooney and in the same token have added to it.

“I think that sets the bar for future Cardinals in their quest for greatness and it makes the former ones extremely proud to have one of their own so successful.”
