PV wins sectional golf title; McDonald, Mineral Ridge advance along with Garfield girls
DIVISION III RIVERVIEW: NEWTON FALLS — Pymatuning Valley won its first sectional title in school history Wednesday at a Division II sectional tournament at Riverview Golf Course.
PV registered a 358 to edge Cardinal’s 360. Jansen Smith led the Lakers with a 79. Eric Heym followed with a 90, and his brother Ryan Heym carded a 94. Michael Clark (95) and Konnor Fetters (96) rounded out the scoring for PV.
Mineral Ridge’s Jake Sylak was the medalist with a 71. He edged Brandon Gibson of Newton Falls (73). Cardinal was second overall with a 360, and Mineral Ridge notched a 361.
The top three teams and top three individuals not on a qualifying team advanced to next week’s Tannenhauf district event on Oct. 8.
DIVISION III SALEM HILLS: SALEM — McDonald placed third at Tuesday’s Division III boys sectional golf tournament to qualify for the district.
The Blue Devils shot a 328 at Salem Hills Golf Club, trailing first-place Canton Central Catholic (280) and Mogadore (313). Leading McDonald was Michael Porter, who carded a 69. He was followed by Caleb Domitrovich (75), Anthony Ragazzine (92) and Calen O’Connell (97).
Columbiana, Springfield, Heartland Christian, East Palestine, Lowellville, Leetonia and Sebring also competed but did not earn any qualifiers. McDonald now plays in the Tannenhauf district on Oct. 8.
DIVISION II PUNDERSON: NEWBURY — Garfield finished third in the Division II girls sectional golf tournament and advanced to next weekend’s district event.
The G-Men scored a 394, led by Grace Mill’s 89. She was followed by Sydney Woconish (100), Madison Woconish, Faith Mills (105) and Grace Edwards (118).
Chalker’s Bella Woods (87) and Bristol’s Katie Webb (93) advanced as individuals. The top four teams and the top four individuals not on a qualifying team advanced to the district at Sable Creek Golf Course in Hartville. Independence won the team title with a score of 355. Laurel was second at 356, and Hawken took third with a 369.
