Howland tennis duo still has chance at state

AKRON — The Howland doubles team of seniors Francesco Elisco and Kate Li and Canfield senior Anna Kan will play Saturday for a chance to qualify for the Division I girls tennis state tournament.

The Howland duo defeated Avon’s Alyssa McLellon and Marta Koziy, 6-1, 6-0, in their first district match on Thursday at the Springside Racquet and Fitness Club, but then lost to Massillon Jackson’s Emma Henson and Samantha Reese, 6-4, 6-3.

Kan beat Walsh Jesuit’s Emma Kealy 6-4, 6-1, and then lost to Hannah Kassaie of Mayfield, 6-2, 6-1.

The top six finishers in singles and doubles will advance to the state tournament, which is Oct. 23-24 at Linder Tennis Center in Mason.

District semifinals, finals and matches to determine fifth- and sixth-place will be Saturday morning back at Springside. Elisco and Li would qualify with a win in their next match.

Division II district tournament play begins today and concludes Saturday. Area participants competing in singles are Cardinal Mooney’s Marissa Landers and Ursuline’s Anna Morgione. In the doubles field is Ursuline’s team of Ella Kobak and Lynn Chahine.
