JFK’s Calderone qualifies in golf

HUBBARD — John F. Kennedy sophomore Samantha Calderone took the fourth and final qualifying spot at Monday’s Division II girls golf sectional at Pine Lakes Golf Club by shooting a 90.

Calderone shot a 46 on the front nine and 44 on the back.

Meanwhile, the Poland girls golf team distanced itself from the rest of the teams by carding a collective 344.

East Palestine was second in 378, just edging out third-place Columbiana (379).

Southeast took the final qualifying spot with 383.

Poland’s Sophia Yurich was the medalist with 77. Teammates Hannah Ogden (81) and Jackie Grisdale (87) placed in the top 10, along with East Palestine’s Payton Sherry (86) and Taylor Bycroft (88).

The top four teams and top four individuals not on a qualifying team advance to the Oct. 6 Division II district at Sable Creek Golf Course in Hartville.

Salem’s Kelly Hutton (80) placed second to Yurich, while Cardinal Mooney’s Alyssa Rapp was fourth (82).

Crestview’s Emily Hill tied Columbiana’s Morgan Dunlap for eighth (89).

Hutton, Rapp, Hill and Calderone advance to districts.
