Avoid rushing to judgment on Ursuline
DEAR EDITOR:
I am deeply concerned by the recent allegations involving a few members of the Ursuline High School football team. Since these reports surfaced, additional stories of bullying and violence have come to light. Unfortunately, many have already judged the accused in the court of public opinion, denying them the opportunity to defend themselves before a judge. The resignation of long-serving coaches and staff has been widely interpreted as evidence of a cover-up, with guilt assigned by association.
As a Roman Catholic institution, Ursuline is held to high standards in managing students and staff. Today’s news coverage suggested that Ursuline has a “culture” of bullying and abuse. I strongly disagree. As a proud graduate from the class of 1972, I know firsthand that Ursuline’s true culture is built on integrity, respect, devotion, honor, discipline, and tradition My coaches were role models, and the teachers and staff consistently went above and beyond to help us succeed.
In our pursuit of justice, let’s remember not to become judge and jury ourselves. True justice requires patience, fairness and a willingness to listen to all sides. Let’s support those who need help and hold individuals accountable through proper channels. By responding with integrity and compassion, we can ensure our community remains strong and united — even in challenging times.
