City was correct to reopen Dana Street

DEAR EDITOR:

As a Warren resident committed to government transparency, I urge City Council to stand by its responsibility to the public and its reopening of Dana Street. The original promise made by Auto ParkIt owner Chris Allan included the creation of thousands of manufacturing jobs for our city, a pledge that remains unfulfilled after nearly a decade.

Despite claims of investment and security concerns, the tangible benefit to Warren has not matched the scale of the closed-road disruption or the expectations raised in 2015. The closure has inconvenienced many and redirected local traffic, while a few jobs have materialized — none of which realize the transformative impact promised.

Public streets should not be held hostage to private interests with unkept commitments. Mr. Alan’s threats to move the business are reminiscent of a pattern seen elsewhere in Ohio: big claims, small returns, and, ultimately, a burden shifted onto residents.

It is time for City Council to prioritize constituents, restore public access and demand accountability from corporate partners.

Reopening Dana Street honors Warren’s public good and sends a message: our city’s welfare cannot be leveraged by empty promises.
