Trumbull County needs a fiscal hawk

1 min read

DEAR EDITOR:

Mark my words -- the Trumbull County commissioners will tap into the Reserve Fund to balance the budget at the end of the year.

Trumbull County needs a full-time budget director, a fiscal hawk, if you will, whose job is to study the numbers, rather than three commissioners who request updates from department heads seven months into the year.

If not for the Reserve Fund, the commissioners would have had no choice but to implement a .25-5% sales tax increase, as discussed earlier in the year.

Now 2026 is fast approaching and the commissioners will soon be looking to craft next year's budget. Expenses continue to outpace revenue. Union contracts are escalating, health care costs are escalating, utility costs are escalating, etc. Where will the money come from to address these shortfalls? Stay tuned.
