Let’s bring back the Cleveland Indians
DEAR EDITOR:
I feel the need to respond to the Tuesday editorial “charging” the fans to ignore the sage words of President Trump and ignore his call to give the “Tribe” back to Cleveland baseball fans. I had moved to Ohio back in 2020, and was proud to be a member of the “Tribe” supporting the Cleveland Indians. Much to my surprise, the management of the team changed the name shortly thereafter. Then the debate about renaming other sports teams, which gave reference to any Native American tribe, such as the Atlanta Braves or the Washington Redskins.
You “claim” that over 1,000 respondents supported shedding all Tribe imagery and going with the new name-“The Guardians.” I was unaware that there were 1,000 liberals who could read or write in this area. I personally think that any survey about changing the “Tribe” name should have polled more than 1,000 people in Northeast Ohio. President Trump isn’t the only one still upset about rebranding the “Tribe” into a team name that sounds like a school crossing guard.
I’m sure that Chief Wahoo has been rolling over in his grave over the loss of the “Tribe” identity and refuses to cross any street which is patrolled by a so-called “guardian.” There has NEVER been any racist connotation in naming the team the Cleveland Indians. Quite the opposite, as the team was named in honor of a Native American player on the team. Ignore the bleeding heart liberals and give us back our Tribe!
