DEAR EDITOR:
On March 14, President Trump issued an executive order that would cut funds from the Institute of Museum and Library Services (IMLS). You may not know that IMLS funds support one of our most beloved local institutions: the Trumbull County Historical Society.
We've got just a couple of days to tell our legislators that this society matters to us -- that it enriches the quality of life here in our county.
Today, I wrote to our legislators to tell them what TCHS has meant for my students. It's a place where they get in touch with their own history, where they gain real-world, job-ready experience through class projects, internships, and part-time employment.
I told them that a blow to TCHS would devastate community pride. That the local history preserved and showcased by TCHS helps us understand who we are, what we value, and what we're capable of. That we have been patriots, innovators, entrepreneurs, and change-makers.
I told them that TCHS has been a vital force in the revitalization of downtown Warren. That it brings traffic and money to our beautiful square and local businesses.
I told them all this and more -- but I don't have to tell you, fellow folks of Trumbull County, because you know. I've seen the way you show your appreciation for TCHS staff when you bump into them in town. I've seen the way you show up to Ghost Walk, to Oktoberfest, to the Underground Railroad tours, and to Hometown Holidays.
Please join me in telling our legislators that TCHS supports our schools, economy, and community. Tell them that government support for local historical societies, libraries, archives, and museums is profoundly and fundamentally American.
In this country, it isn't only the wealthiest communities that get to claim their place in our national history. Our story matters. Our community matters. And, as long as IMLS and TCHS have our support, we won't be allowed to forget that.
