Why oppose new rental inspection fees?

DEAR EDITOR:

I would like to comment having read the comments from the Jan. 18 newspaper regarding possible increases for rental inspection fees.

I believe the writer is probably a landlord not wishing to pay a higher inspection fee. The two gentlemen being chastised are indeed owners of rental properties, and if the legislation is passed, they too would pay higher fees for their rentals. They too would pay the same costs of every other landlord. It is beyond me to understand how the writer assumes “their self-interest is showing.”

Also, at no time does the increase result in an increase for the two city employees. One is governed by a union contract and the other is at the discretion of the City Council.

There are numerous rental units owned by individuals living outside of Warren and “flying under the radar.” Maybe that is this person’s concern. Or maybe, just maybe, that individual knows that increased efforts by the city will result in stronger efforts to root out those landlords who may be “flying under the radar.”
