DEAR EDITOR:
As a past member of the Coast Guard Auxiliary, it was disturbing to see the photo on the front page of the Friday 12/20 newspaper.
One of the things we taught in our safe boating classes was the danger involved in cold-weather boating. In particular, cold water shock, hypothermia, and drowning. The first and last of these factors can be mitigated by simply wearing a PFD, or personal floatation device (life jacket). However, this isn't Summertime when there are lots of other boaters to come to your aid. Once in the water, you may succumb to hypothermia while awaiting rescue.
My advice? Stay home. The fish will still be there next year when it warms up.
