DEAR EDITOR:
I'm going to say this as respectfully, or disrespectfully, as I possibly can.
I'm already seeing the posts on social media from those who voted for the winner of the presidential election bemoaning "losing friends over a stupid election," essentially saying we have to go along to get along going forward.
Absolutely not.
Look, the most recent elections have not been defined by simple policy differences as they were decades ago. No, these most recent elections are defined by, literally, whether or not we believe all people deserve to have basic human and civil rights in this country.
I cannot simply play nice with someone who knowingly voted for a candidate who has already cost me my bodily autonomy depending on the ZIP code of my residence. I shouldn't have to rely on an election for my human rights.
The fact that tens of millions of Americans simply don't care that their LGBTQ+ friends and family are terrified right now because eggs might be cheaper next year is, to be blunt, disgusting. So, when you're sitting at your desks tomorrow and that co-worker who used to show you pictures of their kids or their same sex partner no longer wants to share their life with you, this is why. They don't feel safe with you now. You earned that.
And, I hate to be the bearer of bad news, but the twice-impeached, convicted felon that you just helped to elect will no longer have "adults" in the room to keep him from acting on his worst impulses. When he decides to appoint absolute crackpots like RFK Jr. to lead HHS and your kids don't get the lifesaving vaccines that have protected us for generations anymore, well, don't say we didn't try to warn you.
When their Christian Nationalist fever dreams become reality and your daughters are trapped in marriages they can't escape because they've managed to get no fault divorce eradicated, or they die because they can't get the reproductive healthcare they need due to a catastrophic miscarriage, well, at least you'll be able to fill up with cheap gas on the way to the funeral home.
Hope those cheap eggs you think you're going to get are worth it.
