John Stossel's elitism shines through once again with his recent column on food insecurity, calling it a "fable." With plenty of citations from the far-right Heritage Foundation, he sets out to bust what some consider a myth. This is the same organization that has perpetuated false claims of voter fraud, opposes equal rights for all and has offered an inflated percentage of Americans who rely upon government financial assistance, claims that have been debunked.
Stossel takes a swipe at the assistance provided by SNAP, WIC and school lunch programs, then without benefit of facts, says, "Food insecure adults are more likely to be obese," thus topping off a trifecta of selfish ire with a prejudicial trope.
While John Stossel was avoiding the draft at Princeton, many of our pantry clients were serving in Vietnam. Widows whose husbands' pensions were raided by companies that skipped town come to us every month, as do mothers with special needs children. The list of real people with real economic disadvantages goes on.
Anyone who thinks the necessity of food assistance is a myth should get out here and help with the heavy lifting and be thankful you are blessed enough to pay taxes.
