County engineer has been important partner

DEAR EDITOR:

A recent letter to the editor caught my attention. The author suggested limiting the role of the County Engineer as it related to the Trumbull County Council of Governments, or COG. I am currently an active member of COG and have served as a Brookfield trustee for 24 years.

The work of this council has benefited numerous communities throughout our county. Engineer Randy Smith was instrumental in establishing the COG, and the office plays a vital role in certain COG functions. The primary function of the COG is to promote and support the concept of local entities working together, collectively solving problems, reviewing common challenges and potential solutions and looking for creative ways to get the most out of our tax dollars.

During my years as trustee, we relied on the engineer's office for assistance on a regular basis. Working with a limited township budget was always a challenging experience; and we could always count on the engineer's office to assist when called upon. Why would anyone want to discourage or exclude a partner as important as the county engineer?
