School funding changes historic

This is to express my thanks as a lifelong Ohioan, a parent and as an educator to those in the Ohio Legislature and the governor for implementing phase two of the Fair School Funding Plan. While this is phase two of three in state budget cycles to phase it in, it is a huge step forward in ...

Extremism bad for businesses

In the Disney movie Frozen, the snowman Olaf famously said: “Some people are worth melting for.” But as Disney itself has discovered, extremist legislators are definitely not. All of corporate America needs to learn that lesson. Like many companies, Disney made campaign contributions to lawmakers in its home state, Florida. For better or worse, that’s standard operating procedure for many businesses — they bank on those relationships coming in handy. And in the past, they have. But in recent years, the “standard operating procedure” of these statehouses has become ...

Charter sponsors must be accountable for performance

With the budget bill speeding to the finish line, the Statehouse rumor mill is cranking into high gear. Among the rumblings is an effort by a few charter advocates to weaken the state’s sponsor evaluation system. One proposal making the rounds would move most sponsors to a “portfolio model,” whereby the academic performance of their schools is ignored and only sponsors’ ability to complete paperwork is taken into account. As a quick refresher, sponsors (a.k.a. “authorizers”) are directly responsible for holding public charter schools accountable for results. Various ...

Teenage girls struggle through crisis

As May’s Mental Health Awareness Month neared its end, I reflected on how the mental health crisis among teenage girls is receiving more attention from researchers. This past semester, one of my female students in my beginning English composition class did research on how large percentages of teen girls are continuing to suffer from depression and anxiety, citing statistics from Johns Hopkins Medicine and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. I have noticed that since I began to include mental health as a component in my Gen Z course theme, this topic has particularly ...

Drug overdose crisis about to worsen

The drug overdose crisis is about to get a lot worse, and northeast Ohio is unprepared. There’s a storm coming, and its name is xylazine. What is xylazine? Also called “tranq dope,” it’s an animal tranquilizer that’s commonly added to opioids like fentanyl to create a longer high. It can cause heart problems, respiratory depression and skin ulcers requiring amputation. Since it’s not an opioid, its effects cannot be reversed with naloxone (though naloxone should always be used for any suspected overdose, as it has no side effects). It’s been on the East Coast for a few ...
