AUSTINTOWN QUARTER AUCTION: The Austintown Growth Foundation is holding a quarter auction on Thursday, to benefit its scholarship fund. The fundraiser takes place at the Youngstown Saxon Club, 710 Meridian Road. Doors open at 5 p.m. and the auction starts at 6. There will be more than 80 prizes, gift baskets and door prizes. All money from the auction and raffles goes toward scholarships for deserving Austintown high school seniors. TEAM HOLDS FUNDRAISER: The Hubbard Robotics Team “The Sonic Screwdrivers” will hold a fundraiser 5 to 7 p.m. Sunday at Grace Lutheran Church, 111 Hall Ave., Hubbard, to help continue in their quest as a newly organized robotics team.

YWCA TO HOST FREE EVENTS: April is Minority Health Month. The YWCA will host two free health events, open to the public.

Be Healthy, Be Active, a program for youth, will be held from 3:30 to 5:30 p.m. on Wednesday, at Chaney High School – Chaney Academy New Gym, 731 S. Hazelwood Ave., Youngstown.

Includes information on weight management and obesity in youth, nutrition information, and cardio line dance. There will also be refreshments, door prizes and giveaways.

“You Are What You Eat … and Exercise!” a health fair for women, will be from 9:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. on April 25, at the YWCA of Youngstown, 25 W. Rayen Ave.

Includes information about weight management, a cardio exercise session, weight gain and its relationship with diseases, nutrition, and healthy meal preparation. Also included will be free chair massages, educational hand-outs, giveaways, door prizes and healthy food sampling.

ENDOWMENT DISTRIBUTES LOCALLY: Easter Seals and Youngstown Hearing and Speech have received a $7,000 grant from the Thomases Family Endowment of the Youngstown Area Jewish Federation. Funding will be utilized to provide comprehensive audiology services, complete with dispensing of hearing aids to those in need.

The Thomases Family Endowment Distribution Committee actively practices tzedakah, the Hebrew word that exemplifies righteousness, charity and social justice.

GOODWILL RECEIVES GRANT: Youngstown Area Goodwill Industries recently received a $25,000 grant from The Youngstown Foundation. The grant will enable Goodwill to continue to provide vocational services to individuals who are homeless including vocational assessment, work adjustment, classes, counseling, job club and job placement services.

PARENTS WITHOUT PARTNERS: The Portage County Parents Without Partners Chapter 600 will hold its monthly dance 7:30 to 11:30 p.m. today at Ritchie Memorial Shelter House, Tallmadge. Music will be by disc jockey Mel.

Monthly dances are open to the public. The theme for April’s dance is “Spring Fling.”

HELP WARREN WIN GRANT: State Farm Neighborhood Assist Program offers supports to important hometown causes. Nominations are being accepted for a contest that gives Warren a chance to win.

State Farm Neighborhood Assist will award 40 communities a $25,000 grant that they will use to help make their hometowns a better place to live. Ultimately, the public will vote to decide which causes receive the grants.

LOCAL STORES HELP CHECK OUT HUNGER: Walgreens stores in Mahoning and Trumbull Counties, and Giant Eagle locations in Columbiana, Mahoning and Trumbull counties will participate in Check Out Hunger, a component of the Harvest for Hunger campaign, through April 12. Customers may tear off a $1, $5 or $10 coupon available at the register that will be added to their bill.

Last year, Walgreens stores in the Mahoning Valley raised $6,859 through the Check Out Hunger coupons. In 2014, the funds raised by Supermarket Sponsor, Giant Eagle, provided 502,154 meals to people right here in the Mahoning Valley.

Nonperishable food items may also be placed in designated bins at the front of the Giant Eagle stores.

Harvest for Hunger is one of the largest annual, communitywide food and funds drives in the nation, and takes place in 21 counties in northeast Ohio.
