$50B rural health fund delivers for Ohio

By MICHAEL RULLI 2 min read

Rural communities have always been central to Ohio's strength. From the farms that feed our nation to the small businesses that sustain local economies, these communities represent the hard work, resilience, and determination that define the Buckeye State. Yet for too long, the health care systems serving them have struggled with workforce shortages, financial pressures and aging infrastructure.

Now, a historic investment is creating an opportunity to change that.

Through President Donald Trump's $50 billion Rural Health Transformation Fund, Ohio is receiving more than $202 million in its first year to strengthen rural hospitals, expand essential services and build a more sustainable health care system for generations to come.

And Ohio is wasting no time putting those resources to work.

The Trump administration announced that a $3.15 million investment is being delivered to strengthen pharmacy connectivity and to improve care across rural communities in Ohio through the federal Rural Health Transformation Program. The funding will support the improvement of integrated access for rural healthcare providers to help address low rates of prescription drug monitoring programs. This program will also help Ohio prescribers and pharmacists avoid potentially life-threatening drug interactions and combat the occurrence of individuals fraudulently obtaining controlled substances from multiple healthcare providers.

These investments build on the administration's $10 million in funding previously announced for workforce development to recruit, train and retain healthcare workers across Ohio.

Rural America does not need urban healthcare copied and pasted into smaller communities; it needs a model designed around distance, workforce realities, aging populations and local needs, and that is exactly what the Rural Health Transformation Program does.

Despite unanimous opposition from Democrats in Congress, President Trump signed the Working Families Tax Cuts Act into law, creating the Rural Health Transformation Program and investing a $50 billion spread over five years to transparently and efficiently transform rural health access.

The Trump administration is committed to strengthening the rural health workforce, modernizing facilities and technology and deploying innovative care models that bring high-quality health services to rural communities nationwide. I was proud to vote for the creation of the Rural Health Transformation Fund and am even prouder to see the much-needed funds flowing into rural Ohio.
