For the first time in 20 years, no schools in the Warren City School District were federally designated as underperforming or needing state support for educational purposes by the Ohio Every Student Succeeds Act.
Superintendent Steve Chiaro announced the news at a school board meeting at the end of January, marking what the district called a "major milestone" in its work to offer high-quality education for students.
Not only is it a major milestone for the school district but it's a great accomplishment in the grand scheme of things.
The Ohio Department of Education and Workforce recently released the latest Every Student Succeeds Act designations and the report showed that nearly 400 schools across Ohio, including others in Trumbull County, are designated as underperforming.
In a letter to the district, State Support Team Region 5 Director Michele Moore stated that the "intentional and systematic" focus of Warren City Schools on continuous improvement was a key factor in its success.
"This intentionality has led to all of the schools being identification-free for the first time in 20-plus years," Moore wrote in her release. "As a mid-size urban school, this is especially commendable."
This newspaper applauds Chiaro and his district for their work to achieve this status. But we also ask that you maintain your "intentional and systematic focus" and take the district to even higher heights.
According to a news release from Chiaro, the district has that exact mindset. He stated, "Our work is nowhere near completion and is ongoing with our goal of making continued strides and success for all children."
The Warren City School District also is now in a prime position to act as an example for schools across Trumbull County -- and it should be. The district showed that through hard work and a consistent focus on improvement, no hole is too deep to dig out of.
This newspaper implores schools across the county to take notice because they could be the next ones to accomplish a similar feat.
