ORCHID: To the Salvation Army and Family Mission, both in Warren, for the incredible amount of help they provide at the holidays. This week, families were greeted with mounds of toys at the mission. Also, cars lined up around the block for hours this week to pick up holiday meal donations at the Salvation Army. Orchid also goes to the many volunteers and donors who help make these programs possible and Christmas a little brighter for those in need.
ONION: To Christopher Gembicki, 37 of Warren, who pleaded guilty to vandalizing the historic Trumbull County Courthouse by throwing rocks at the windows. Orchid goes to Trumbull Common Pleas Judge Ronald Rice, who refused this week to accept the plea agreement because a plan for restitution hadn't yet been ironed out. Undeniably, that plan must spell out how Gembicki will pay back the $3,490 worth of damage that he caused.
ONION: To the miscreant who posted on social media a threat of violence at the Warren-Trumbull County Public Library this week, leading to early closure of all the Trumbull County library branches that day and investigation by local police. Few would argue that the library is a wonderful, safe place that provides a location for entertainment, education and relaxation at no admission cost for patrons. Shame on anyone who would think this is a logical place to target -- either for real or as a hoax. Police are continuing their investigation, and we can only hope an arrest is made soon.
ORCHID: To the Ohio Department of Higher Education for awarding $1.1 million to Youngstown State University's Choose Ohio First scholarship program to help support about 80 new YSU STEM students over the next five years. The scholarship funds help make the YSU STEM programs more attractive to those seeking a degree in the fields of science, technology, engineering and mathematics.
ONION: To the grinches who broke into a Genessee Avenue NE, Warren, home and stole $1,600 worth of electronics and toys, just days before Christmas. Among the items stolen were Christmas and birthday gifts for the young son of Sarah Pena-Lewis and her husband, Corey Lewis. The house was damaged and ransacked. The doorbell camera captured good surveillance photos that we can only hope is used to capture these burglars and hold them accountable for the losses and for ruining Christmas for this family.
