Celebrated Russian composer Rodion Shchedrin dies at age 92

MOSCOW — Russian composer Rodion Shchedrin, who created the celebrated ballets “Anna Karenina” and the “Carmen Suite,” has died in Germany at age of 92, Moscow’s Bolshoi Theater said Friday. He and his wife of 57 years, legendary ballerina Maya Plisetskaya, dominated the Soviet and Russian cultural scene for the latter part of the last century. She died in 2015. Randy Moffitt, major league reliever and brother of Billie Jean King, dies

LONG BEACH, Calif. — Randy Moffitt, a reliever who played 12 seasons in Major League Baseball and was the younger brother of tennis great and equality advocate Billie Jean King, has died after an extended illness. He was 76. Moffitt died on Thursday in Long Beach, California, according to a representative of the family. Moffitt was drafted by the San Francisco Giants in the first round in 1970 and made his major league debut with the team in 1972. VIENNA — Robert L. “Bob” Thompson, 82, passed away Wednesday, Aug. 20, 2025, at the Cleveland Clinic, following cardiac arrest. Bob was born July 12, 1943, in Coalport, Pa., the son of Robert W. Thompson and Sarah Boyle Sherwin. He was raised in Clearfield, Pa. In school, he was active in football and wrestling and graduated in the class of 1961. ORWELL — Norman U. Yoder, 19, died Monday, Aug. 25, 2025, in New Castle, Pa. A cause is pending. He was born Feb. 7, 2006, in Claridon Township, a son of Urie E. and Carolyn Miller Yoder. He was a member of the Old Order Amish Church. Survivors include his parents; siblings, Marlene Mullet, Caroline Yoder, and Robert, James, Michael and Myron Yoder; his paternal grandmother; two maternal grandparents; and special friend, Ruth Mullet.
