Dolores Baran 1931-2026

Dolores Baran

NILES -- Dolores Baran, 95, passed away peacefully on All Saints Day, Sunday, Nov. 1, 2026, in her home, surrounded by family and friends.

Dolores was born on Sept. 9, 1931, in Apollo, Pa., to the late John and Frances Serotko, and grew up in the area affectionately called "Peg Town."

She married the late Edward Baran on Aug. 4, 1951; and together they raised their five children in Warren, Ohio. After Edward's passing in 1971, Dolores met her longtime companion, Angelo James, and spent many decades with him until his passing in 2025.

Dolores worked as a cook at McKinley Lanes Bowling Alley and later as a tremendous housekeeper at Warren General Hospital, always taking pride in her work. She was a member of St. Pope John XXIII Parish--St. Stephen Church, Niles, and a former member of Christ Our King Church, Warren, where she was happy and proud to teach CCD classes to the young children.

Everyone who knew Dolores knew how much she loved bowling, dancing and "taking a ride,” which we all knew meant to the casino where she hoped to "win big.” In their younger years, she and Angelo enjoyed weekend trips to Geneva-on-the-Lake. One of Dolores' favorite memories was the family trip to Rocky Gap that she went on for her 85th birthday. As an avid baker and cook, Dolores was well known for her kolache cookies, nut bread and famous lemon dessert and her family looked forward to her cabbage rolls and cheesy potatoes at gatherings.

Dolores was kind to everyone she encountered and welcomed everyone into her home with love. She went out of her way to make her family and friends feel special, always remembering to send a card at Christmas and for their birthday.

She is survived by her children, Diane (Doug) Jones, Cheryl (Tim) Felger, Charles (Karen) Baran, and MaryLou (Tim) Allison; Angelo's daughters, whom she loved as her own, Denise (David) Bopp, Joni (George) Summers, Tamy McBride, and Michele Roman; sister, Rosella McCloskey; and many grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces, and nephews.

Along with her parents and her husband, Edward, and partner, Angelo, Dolores was preceded in death by her sister, Florence Scuillo; brother, John Serotko III; son, Edward Baran; and her granddaughter, Holly Miranda.

Calling hours will be from 5 to 7 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 5, 2026, at Holeton-Yuhasz Funeral Home in Niles. The Mass of Christian Burial will be at 11 a.m. Friday, Nov. 6, 2026, at St. Stephen Church, preceded by a 10:30 a.m. prayer service, at the funeral home. The Rev. Leo Wehrlin will be the celebrant. Burial will take place in St. Stephen Cemetery.

The family would like to extend a special thank you to Dolores' caregivers, who worked hard to fill her days with compassion, laughter and love. Thank you to Carla, Carol, Renee, Sara, Frances, Lesha, Lisa, Heather and Maddie, and to the Mercy Health Hospice nurses, doctors, and support staff who took part in her medical care.
