Sandra S. Avery 1943-2026

LAKE MILTON -- Sandra S. Avery, 83, of Lake Milton, formerly of Girard, passed away on Wednesday, Sept. 2, 2026, at the Hospice House in Poland, surrounded by her loving family.

Sandy was born April 20, 1943, in Youngstown, the daughter of Donald P. and Shirley Schenck Williams.

Sandy graduated from Youngstown State University with a master's degree in education. She had taught at Girard City Schools from 1978 to 1984 and then taught at Youngstown City Schools, from where she retired.

Sandy was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Girard, where she had taught Sunday School, Bible studies and volunteered for the Wednesday Night Youth Club and Hannah's Circle.

She was also a member of the N.E.A. and the O.E.A. Teachers Union.

She leaves to cherish her memory, her husband of 61 years, John Avery, whom she married July 17, 1965; her son, John Christopher Avery and his wife, Kimberlee; her daughter, Jennifer Warino and her husband, Gregory; her brother, Donald Williams; grandchildren, Lydia Avery (Nate Mohn), Mara (Brandon) Fiedler, Leah (Sam) Eaton, Josephina Warino, Graham Warino and John W.F. Avery; and her great-grandchildren, Emery and Joseph Tanner Fiedler.

Besides her parents, Sandy was preceded in death by her sisters, Diana Mancini and Cheryl Bodnar; and brothers, David and Frederick Williams.

The family will receive relatives and friends from 4 to 6 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 9, at Blackstone Funeral Home, where a funeral service will follow at 6 p.m.

The family suggests any memorial contributions can be made to the American Cancer Society in Sandy's memory.
