NILES -- Melanie Louise Karafa Nalepa, 69, passed away peacefully surrounded by her loved ones on Monday, Sept. 7, 2026, after an extended illness at Aventura at Humility House in Austintown.
Melanie was born on Oct. 31, 1956, in Warren, to Michael and Susan Karafa. Her life began and ended on a holiday, with her birth on Halloween and her passing on Labor Day.
She was a proud graduate of Maplewood High School, class of 1975. Melanie then continued her education at Westminster College and Kent State University. It was at Kent State University that she discovered a passion for the theater and enjoyed participating in many productions. She instilled in her children and grandchildren her love for education and the arts.
On July 23, 1977, Melanie married her high school sweetheart, Mark Nalepa. Together they shared 49 years of wonderful marriage, building a life filled with love, laughter, family and countless cherished memories. They were blessed with two daughters, whom Melanie devoted herself to throughout their childhood and beyond. She was an active and loving presence in their lives, serving as their Campfire leader and proudly attending their many extracurricular activities. She treasured every opportunity to support and encourage her girls.
Melanie spent many years as a Tupperware dealer, where her hard work and determination earned her numerous accomplishments, including vacations and even two cars. She also spent time working as a sales associate for Kohl's Department Store and later as a customer service representative for KraftMaid Cabinetry, from which she eventually retired.
Melanie was a member of St. Robert Church, where she was once an active part of the church community for many years. She dedicated her time and talents to the church and served as the leader of the Ladies Guild.
To Melanie, nothing was more important than spending time with her family. She loved hosting relatives for holidays, cookouts and other celebrations. Melanie also enjoyed going with her family to Kraynak's to admire the seasonal decorations. Because of her love for holidays, she especially loved shopping for gifts and decor to make each season memorable.
Her presence, joy, and laughter made every day feel special. Melanie created many beautiful memories and traditions for her loved ones, which they will carry in their hearts for the rest of their lives.
Melanie is survived by her beloved family: her husband, Mark Nalepa; her mother, Susan Karafa; her daughters, Jessamyn (Samuel) Moon and Marjorie (Mitchell) Sullivan; her granddaughters, Marissa, Mallory, Makayla, Marlana and Alexis; and her niece, Madeleine.
She is also survived by her sisters and brother, Melinda (James) Hilton, Melissa (James) Morton, and Martin Karafa. Melanie leaves behind many more extended relatives and friends, all of whom she loved dearly.
Melanie was preceded in death by her father, Michael Karafa.
Melanie's visitation will be from noon to 2 p.m. Monday, Sept. 14, 2026, at Carl W. Hall Funeral Home, where services will begin at 2 p.m.
Interment will follow the services in Greenlawn Cemetery, Greene Twp.
Melanie was a person whose loving heart left a mark on the lives of everyone she met. Though her life has come to an end, the memory of her generosity, intelligence and kindness will live on in the minds of those who loved her.
Her family would like to extend their heartfelt gratitude to the nursing staff at Aventura and everyone at Harmony Hospice, especially Megan, Renee and Ron, for the care and compassion they have shown.
