AUSTINTOWN -- Betty J. Stephens, 86, passed away Wednesday, Sept. 23, 2026, at Austintown Healthcare Center in Austintown.
Betty was born July 7, 1940, in St. Louis, Missouri, a daughter of the late John and Anna Mae Ellison.
Betty was a member of the Valley Missionary Baptist Church in Niles and served as a Sunday school teacher. She loved spending time with her church community and spreading God's word.
Betty retired as an assistant schoolteacher from the Niles City School District. She cherished her tenure, especially her interaction with the children.
Betty was a die-hard Pittsburgh Steelers fan and would let anyone know. She even wrote a letter to Coach Cowher advising him to stop swearing and included one of her famous poems.
Betty will be sadly missed by her sons, Mark (Janine) Stephens of Girard, and Glenn (Lisa) Stephens of Warren; daughter, Veronica Stephens of Columbus; sister, Shirley Billings of Niles; her grandchildren and great-grandchildren; and her nieces and nephews.
Besides her husband of 54 years, John T. Stephens, whom she married June 24, 1961, and who passed away Oct. 23, 2016, she was preceded in death by her parents; her sister, Delores Dawson; her brothers, John Ellison and Ephiram Ellison; and her grandson, Shane Stephens.
Calling hours will be 10 to 11 a.m., with a service following, on Wednesday, Sept. 30, 2026, at Valley Missionary Baptist Church, 405 Depot St., Niles, OH 44446, with the Rev. Jack Pettis officiating.
Interment will follow services in Niles Union Cemetery.
