Willie R. Jones 1942-2026

DISTRICT HEIGHTS, Md. -- Willie Roy Jones, 83, departed this life at 1:41 p.m. Friday, Aug. 7, 2026, at his residence in District Heights, Maryland.

He was born Oct. 24, 1942, in Opelika, Alabama, the son of Willie B. and Rose Lee Hughley Jones, living in the area for 61 years, coming from Warren.

Willie was employed with the U.S. Defense Intelligence Agency for many years, was a self-employed photographer, and worked at DC Sportsfan, also as a photographer. He was a 1960 graduate of Warren G. Harding High School, where he was a standout player in baseball, basketball and football, and attended Ohio State University. He was a member of the Sons of Abraham No. 6 Universal Masonic Brotherhood Inc. OES, Washington, D.C., and enjoyed bowling.

He served honorably in the U.S. Marine Corps as a private E-1 from Jan. 29, 1963, to Jan. 15, 1969, during the Vietnam conflict.

He received the Navy Unit Commendation Medal; the Vietnam Service Medal; the Republic of Vietnam Campaign Medal; the Purple Heart; the National Defense Service Medal; the Rifle/Marksman Badge; and the Good Conduct Medal.

He leaves to mourn one brother, Lawrence (Patricia) Jones of Warren; one sister, Ms. Rosetta Priest of Warren; a special friend, Ms. Virginia Layton of District Heights, Maryland; and a host of relatives and friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents and one brother, Donald Jones.

A memorial service will begin at 1 p.m. Friday, Aug. 28, 2026, at the Sterling-McCullough Williams Funeral Chapel, where calling hours will be noon to 1 p.m.

Burial will take place in Oakwood Cemetery.
