Susan P. Schroeder 1940-2026

ROHNERT PARK, Calif. -- Susan Parkomaki Schroeder, 85, formerly of Hiram, passed away peacefully in her sleep on Sunday, Aug. 2, 2026.

She was born Oct. 18, 1940, in Conneaut, to the late Donald and Ina Argelander Parkomaki.

She was raised in Conneaut and graduated from Rowe High School. Susan continued her education at Kent State University, where she earned both her bachelor's degree in art education and her Master of Fine Arts degree in fiber arts.

Susan married the love of her life, George, on Aug. 11, 1962. Susan began her career teaching art in the Streetsboro and Southeast school districts. She then taught art and art history at Hiram College before becoming a tenured professor of art at Kent State University, Trumbull. She also served as director of the art gallery at Kent Trumbull.

In addition to touching the lives of her many students, Susan was an accomplished multidisciplinary artist. She worked in fiber arts, ceramics, drawing and painting. She exhibited extensively across the U.S. and internationally. Her work is held in the collections of Hiram College, the Progressive Art Collection and the Artists Archive of the Western Reserve. Susan enjoyed travel and entertaining.

Susan will forever be missed by her son, Benjamin (Rosanna) Schroeder, as well as many nieces, nephews, cousins and dear friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her siblings, Bill and Jack Parkomaki; and her husband, George Schroeder.

Please join the family for a visitation from 10 a.m. to noon Saturday, Aug. 22, 2026, at Mallory-DeHaven-Carlson Funeral Home & Cremation Services, 8382 Center St., Garrettsville, OH 44231. A service will begin at the funeral home at noon, with Dixon Slingerland officiating. Susan will then be taken to Fairview Cemetery in Hiram, where she will be lovingly laid to rest with her beloved, George.
