NEWTON FALLS -- Johnny L. Payne, age 76, of Newton Falls, passed away peacefully, into eternal rest, Thursday, Aug. 6, 2026, at his daughter's residence.
He was born March 27, 1950, in Madison, W.Va., the son of the late Raymond Dewey Payne and Barbara Fay Miller Payne.
John graduated from Duval High School in Griffithsville, W.Va., in the Class of 1970.
After high school, he married the love of his life, Kathryn Jane Winters, on July 12, 1971, and they enjoyed 53 years of marriage together until her death on Feb. 4, 2025.
John worked as an assembler for General Motors in Lordstown for 31 years, retiring in 2001.
He was a member of the UAW Local 1112, and the Apostolic Pentecostal Church in Warren.
John loved splitting wood, going to church, bicycling, gardening, researching aliens, and enjoyed spending time with his kids, grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, Lonnie Willis Payne and Sampie Eugene Payne; and one sister, Phyillis Jean Payne.
John is survived by one daughter, Sherry L. Holk (Doug Popluhar) of Burghill; one son, Michael L. Payne of North Jackson; one sister, Lilley M. Payne of Charleston, W.Va.; two brothers, Rocky Payne of Morrisville, W.Va., and Daniel Loria Payne of Garretts Bend, W.Va.; six grandchildren, Tiffany Rose Laney, Crystal Winter Holk, Conner Jonathan Lee Payne, Talon James Holk, Donavan Christopher Lee Payne and Quinzell Marie Payne; and two great-grandchildren, Ryder Lee Laney and Lochlyn Marie Laney.
Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, Aug. 12, 2026, at the Apostolic Pentecostal Church, 3101 DeForest Road SE, Warren, OH 44484, with Pastor Douglas Brown officiating. Calling hours will be from 5 to 7 p.m. on Tuesday, Aug. 11, 2026, at the James Funeral Home in Newton Falls.
He will be laid to rest beside his wife Kathryn in Jackson Township Cemetery in North Jackson.
