BROOKFIELD -- Tommy D. Nelman, 78, passed away Friday, July 10, 2026, at his home.
He was born Feb. 9, 1948, in Ravenna, a son of the late Warren Nelman and Mary A. "Mitzi" Kallio. He was also raised by his stepfather, Alvin Kallio, who loved him like his own.
He was a 1966 graduate of Kent Roosevelt High School and was employed at Packard Electric as a machine technician for 32 years.
Tommy was a proud veteran of the United States Navy, having served during the Vietnam War from 1968 to 1972. He then re-enlisted from 1973 to 1977, serving a total of eight years in the Navy. He was a first-class machinist mate and worked as part of the nuclear program, as well as the demolition team. If the enemy captured one of the ships, it was Tommy's job to destroy it from the inside out.
Tommy was a devoted Cleveland Indians fan and enjoyed watching the Mahoning Valley Scrappers play on the field as well.
His greatest joy was supporting his son, Tommy, in sports, never missing a game, even from his car when his health declined, showing his unwavering support and love.
He is survived by his siblings, Peter R. (Patricia) Nelman and Kimberly K. (Michael) Kallio; his sons, Tommy Garringer and RJ Coleman; his significant other, Darlene Gates; his special friends, Erica Garringer and Pappy Rick; and his niece and caregiver, as well as his other nieces and nephews whom he loved dearly.
He was preceded in death by his siblings, Nancy Suverison and Warren Nelman Jr.; niece, Tina Flask; stepfather, Alvin R. Kallio; and his parents, Mary A. "Mitzi" Kallio and Warren Nelman.
Services will begin at noon Thursday, July 16, 2026, at Carl W. Hall Funeral Home, where Deacon Robert Simmerly will officiate. Friends and family may call 10 a.m. to noon Thursday at the funeral home.
Interment will be in All Souls Cemetery, Bazetta Township. Everyone is welcome to show up wearing their favorite baseball attire in honor of Tommy's love for the sport.
