Japanese militant who took part in 1972 Tel Aviv airport attack dies

BEIRUT (AP) -- Kozo Okamoto, a Japanese militant involved in a deadly attack on Tel Aviv's airport over 50 years ago, has died in Beirut at 78.

The Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine, which protected him, announced his death on Thursday. Okamoto had been ill for a long time.

He served 12 years in an Israeli prison for the 1972 attack that killed 26 people. Released in a 1985 prisoner exchange, he gained asylum in Lebanon.

Okamoto who was considered a terrorist by Israel and Japan. He was considered a hero by many in Lebanon and the Arab world.
