LIBERTY TOWNSHIP — William Anderson “Bill” Small, 70, passed away Sunday, May 31, 2026, at the Cleveland Clinic surrounded by his family.
Bill was born Sept. 15, 1955, in Weirton, W.Va., a son of Anderson Small Jr. and Emma Johns Small.
After high school, Bill proudly served in the United States Marine Corps. Traveling the world as a corporal in communications, he was responsible for sensitive and confidential information before he was honorably discharged. Thereafter, he became a safety inspector at WCI Steel.
Throughout his life, Bill enjoyed many hobbies. He was an avid marksman who enjoyed hunting, fishing and cooking, and most recently, he became a pitmaster who hosted many barbecues where good food and fond memories were made.
His biggest joy was his family.
For over 35 years, Bill dedicated countless hours to his NA Fellowship, through which he helped others find hope, strength and healing through recovery. Through this devotion to mentoring and sponsoring those in their sobriety journeys, he touched many lives. This was Bill’s ministry.
Left to cherish Bill’s memory are his children, William Smith, Jennifer M. Small, Vaughn M. Small and Kenise Gardner; grandchildren, Vaughn M. Small Jr., Peter Small, Jenise Turner, Marquise Oliver, Deshayla Floyd, Tyquavious Tolefree, Amiah Smith, Javen Jordan, William Smith Jr. and William Smith III; sisters, Debra Small and Andrea Heplin; brothers, Vaughn (Stephanie Walker) Small and Anthony Small; along with many adored nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Anderson and Emma Small.
A memorial service, which will include military honors for Bill, will take place 2 p.m. Saturday, June 13, 2026, at Blackstone Funeral Home, Girard, with a luncheon / repast to follow at the Franciscan Shrine of Our Lady Comforter of the Afflicted, 517 Belle Vista Ave., Youngstown, OH 44509.
