WARREN — Publio “Zam” Zampedro, 98, passed away peacefully surrounded by family on Thursday, June 25, 2026, at St. Joseph Warren Hospital.

Publio, known affectionately as “Zam,” was born Sept. 20, 1927, in Dunkirk, New York, the son of the late John and Theresa “Liz” Biscaro Zampedro.

Zam’s journey was shaped early by his commitment to service. As a proud veteran of the United States Navy, he served his country with honor during both World War II and the Korean War. This period in his life fostered a sense of discipline and dedication that would continue to influence him throughout the years.

After his military service, Zam embarked on an impressive 36-year career as a meat cutter with Kroger Co. His deep commitment to his profession and colleagues stood as a testament to his character — steady, reliable and caring. He forged many friendships along the way, always willing to lend a helping hand.

Outside his career, Zam delighted in the simple joys of life. He enjoyed traveling, especially journeys that took him to casinos, where he embraced the excitement and camaraderie of friendly games. Bowling was another cherished pastime; Zam was an avid participant, belonging to several leagues and finding great pleasure in the sport.

Golfing remained one of Zam’s greatest passions. His love for the game was made even sweeter by achieving a memorable milestone — a hole-in-one at Tamer Win Golf Course.

Above all, Zam was a beloved husband, father, brother and friend.

He is survived by his devoted wife, the former Mari Lou Pinch, whom he married June 15, 1974, and whose partnership and companionship were a source of great happiness. His memory will be lovingly cherished by his children, Leanne Zampedro, Jon (Beth) Zampedro and Richard Nelson; sister, Jane Zampedro; daughter-in-law, RoseLyn Nelson; eight grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandson.

He was preceded in death by his son, Jeffrey Nelson; and brothers, John S. Zampedro and Leo Zampedro.

Friends and family are invited to gather for a viewing to take place 4 to 6 p.m. Tuesday, June 30, 2026, at Peter Rossi & Son Memorial Chapel, 1884 North Road NE, Warren, OH 44483. A funeral service will begin at 11 a.m. Wednesday, July 1, 2026, at the funeral home.

He will be laid to rest in All Souls Cemetery.
