Peggy E. Kanche 1942-2026

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. — Peggy Elaine Goodwyn Kanche, beloved wife, sister, aunt and friend, passed away Tuesday, May 26, 2026, at home.

She was born Tuesday, Nov. 10, 1942, in Birmingham, Alabama. She was known for her warm hospitality and counseling young people.

Peggy enjoyed traveling, especially to Cabo San Lucas, every spring. As an avid golfer, she made lifelong friends everywhere she lived.

She graduated from Walker County High School, Jasper, Alabama; Huntingdon College, Montgomery, Alabama; and did graduate work at Florida State University, earning a master’s degree in psychology from Auburn University.

She began her career as a juvenile probation officer in Montgomery, Alabama, and became deputy director of youth services for the state of Alabama.

She married Michael Kanche in Kansas City, Missouri, and was employed by Johnson City, Kansas, as the director of corrections. Following a move to Arizona, Peggy oversaw the development, construction and activation of a boot camp for juvenile offenders. Following that, she worked as program director for a federal correctional facility in Tonopah, Arizona. Following retirement from criminal justice work, Peggy and Mike started a sales and marketing company in industrial security.

Peggy is survived by her husband, Mike; sisters, Nancy Laird and Nelle O’Connor; Mike’s daughters, Kristin and Kara; and numerous beloved nephews, nieces and cousins.
