BILLINGS, Mont. -- David John Wiltrout, known to many as "Trout," passed away Tuesday, May 26, 2026, in Billings, Montana, at the age of 68, leaving behind a legendary trail of laughter, adventure and unforgettable memories.
David was born April 2, 1958, in Warren, to Phyllis Moler Wiltrout Jobes and the late Roger Wiltrout Sr. From an early age, he embraced life with boundless energy, turning ordinary days into extraordinary stories.
A 1976 graduate of Maplewood High School in Mecca, David was the ultimate prankster. He was famously known for masterminding the legendary feat of placing a Volkswagen Beetle on top of the school. Rumor also has it that he may have been connected to the mysterious rocket that somehow found its way through the school roof. His vibrant personality, quick wit and infectious enthusiasm could light up any room.
After high school, David headed west. The moment he saw the Rocky Mountains, it was love at first sight. He knew he had found where he belonged, and Montana became his lifelong home.
The great outdoors was David's true sanctuary. He held a deep and enduring love for Montana and its wild places. An avid hiker, he found peace on mountain peaks and joy in the challenge of rugged trails. An experienced hunter and fisherman, he spent countless sunrises in the woods and along the water, often accompanied by his beloved dog, Trigger. For David, nature was not only a place of adventure but also a place of connection, reflection and storytelling around a campfire.
When David first arrived in Montana, he began his career with Dick Anderson Construction, working in Yellowstone National Park on the winter rehabilitation project of the historic Old Faithful Inn. During the off-season, workers traveled by snowmobile and occasionally found themselves being chased by moose. Reflecting on David, Dick Anderson said, "He had a ton of talent, and I always appreciated Dave and his ability to get things done. Dave is one of the people you never forget once you've met him."
David later owned and operated Flame-Safe of the Rockies, a fire-retardant company. He was known for his kindness, compassion and willingness to help anyone in need.
On one of his trips back east, David became a devoted fan of the Pittsburgh Steelers and proudly carried a Terrible Towel with him back to Montana.
David's adventurous spirit lives on through his loving family. He is survived by his wife, Susan; his mother, Phyllis Moler Wiltrout Jobes; his daughters, Katy (Jarred) Oberg, Ashley Wiltrout and Amy Kroll; his grandchildren, Rylee and Cid; his brother, Roger (Kim) Wiltrout Jr.; and his sisters, Lori (Cliff) Wilson, Tracy (Bob) Odvar and Cathy (Phil) Wiltrout.
He was preceded in death by his father, Roger Wiltrout Sr., and his beloved grandsons, Andrew and Logan.
David approached his final horizon just as he lived his life -- boldly, fearlessly and without regret. He will be deeply missed but never forgotten by his family, friends and all who were fortunate enough to share in his remarkable journey.
In David's memory, take a walk on your favorite trail, spend time in nature or embark on a new adventure.
Memorial donations may be made in David's name to the Yellowstone River Parks Association through its online donation program at YRPA.org. Supporting this organization honors one of the many natural treasures that David loved and cared for so deeply.
A celebration of David's life will take place at a future date.
