Samuel C. Wagner 1932-2026
CHAMPION – Samuel Charles Wagner, 94, passed away Tuesday, May 12, 2026, surrounded by his family at his residence.
Samuel was born May 8, 1932, in St. Charles, Pa., a son of the late George Addison and Doris Alma Wagner.
He was a graduate of Red Bank High School in New Bethlehem, Pa. He tried out to play for the Pittsburgh Pirates until he was drafted into the Navy to serve his country.
He was employed at Copperweld, A&P and American Welding. He also worked at Blue Dolphin Pools and owned his own carpet cleaning business at the end of his career.
Samuel was an avid hunter and fisherman. He enjoyed being outdoors, whether he was gardening, snowmobiling, playing baseball or golfing. He was also a Pittsburgh sports fan.
Sam was known to be a loving husband, father and grandfather, known as Poppy to his grandchildren. He loved teaching his grandchildren new things and giving them treats when they visited, especially his homemade chocolate chip cookies.
Sam will be deeply missed by his loving wife, Janice Wagner, whom he married Nov. 30, 1957; daughters, Karen (Jack) Wagner Conlan, Denise (Scott) Wagner Rowe and Diane (Jeff) Wagner Hughes; grandchildren, Kristen (Brandon) Luscher Gump, Brad (Caitlin) Luscher, Steven Hughes (Jaclyn Carpenter), Laura (Aaron) Hughes Willard, Jonathan Conlan, Jacqueline (Hampton) Conlan McGrath, Allison Rowe and her fiance, Jason Hafner, and Jacob (Michelle) Rowe; and great-grandchildren, Annelise, Charlotte, Tyler and Eli.
Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by his sister, Shirley Sayers.
Family and friends may visit 11 a.m. to noon Wednesday, May 20, 2026, at Howland Community Church, 198 Niles Cortland Road SE, Warren, where funeral services will follow at noon.
Entombment will take place in Crown Hill Burial Park, where military honors will be held.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Howland Community Church or plant a tree in his memory on our website in honor of Sam’s love of nature.
