Joseph M. Montecalvo 1935-2026

CORTLAND — Joseph Michael Montecalvo, 91, passed away on Monday, April 27, 2026, at his home, with his family by his side.

He was born March 19, 1935, in Warren, the son of Joseph and Angelina Capito Montecalvo.

Joseph was a 1953 graduate of St. Mary High School in Warren. He entered the United States Coast Guard in 1953, and was honorably discharged in 1957. Joe was a member of the Knights of Columbus and St. Robert Bellarmine Catholic Church.

Joe was an avid golfer, playing for many years in local golf leagues. He also enjoyed his Monday and Wednesday golf outings with his friends from Packard Electric.

He worked at Packard Electric from 1953 until he retired in 1991, with 38 years of service, as a foreman and general foreman. His retirement from Packard was almost as long as his employment had been.

Joe was a very gifted artist and musician, playing both the accordion and organ. Many a holiday was spent with Christmas music pouring out of the organ. He was also a gifted gardener, priding himself on his ability to grow the very best quality tomatoes.

A lifelong Cleveland Indians and Browns fan, he was fortunate enough to be around for their last championship years. He was 13 when the Indians won their last World Series and 29 when the Browns accomplished the feat. (So, you know he was dedicated because who else would put up with that yearly frustration?)

Joe married Fannie Rossi in April of 1955; and the couple spent 56 years raising their children and enjoying life together.

He is survived by his daughter, Jean Marie (Brian) Fischer of Cortland; son, Mark (Ramona) Montecalvo of Cortland; sister, Kathy Smejkal of Fort Atkinson, Wisconsin; granddaughters, Natalie (Zach) Montecalvo of Toledo and Jackie (Brent) Wright; grandson, Mark (Caitlyn) Fischer of Austintown; great-grandchildren, Philomena Wright, Olivia and Jameson Fischer; companion and special friend, Jane Organ; and many nieces, nephews and cousins.

Joe’s main hope and objective was that his family and friends would live their best lives treating each other with the love and respect that he always gave them. He also hoped that people would treat each other with kindness rather than indifference or malice.

Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Fannie Rossi Montecalvo; his brothers, Nick and Larry Montecalvo; and his sister, Patricia Terbovich.

A memorial service will begin at 11 a.m. Saturday, May 16, 2026, at the Carl W. Hall Funeral Home. Visitation will be from 9 a.m. until service time on Saturday at the funeral home.

Private interment will be in All Souls Cemetery, Bazetta.

In lieu of flowers, please make material contributions to the Oblate Sisters of the Sacred Heart of Jesus, 50 Warner Road, Hubbard, OH 44425, in his memory.
