Clarence Johnson 1943-2026
CORTLAND — Clarence “Sonny” Johnson passed away Friday evening, May 1, 2026, at Hospice House.
He was born May 27, 1943, at home in Fowler, a son of the late Albert and Barbara Johnson.
He began his education attending Fowler schools, later moved schools and graduated from Warren G. Harding High School in the class of 1961.
Clarence was a proud Vietnam veteran who loved his country deeply. Upon returning from service, Clarence worked as a heavy equipment repairman, first for Heckett and later for Gibson Stewart Machinery until his retirement in 2005.
Clarence was an avid shooter whose expertise stemmed from childhood on the farm. He spent his younger years in the woods, organizing hunts and outings, or in his yard, manicuring it to a pristine standard. He was also a refined competitive roller-skater, skating at every club within a hundred-mile radius. His home was lined with shelves of trophies from his bowling achievements and drag-racing triumphs, and in his workshop he built the most intricate model steam engines and beautiful woodworking pieces.
Some knew him as “Grumpy,” a nickname he proudly displayed on his repair truck’s door, but those who had the pleasure of loving him would tell you there was far more to him than that. He was simply the most steadfast, mischievous and interesting man you could know. He found joy in the little things — petting dogs, telling stories and stopping for an ice cream cone on a Friday afternoon. He would want us to continue living in such a way as this.
He will be lovingly remembered by his longtime partner, Gayle Juillerat of Cortland; his sister, Lois Schmauder of Wind Gap, Pa.; and by many friends who became family.
He was preceded in death by his parents.
Special thanks to the wonderful staff at Heritage Manor on Gypsy Lane for their thorough and devoted care of Clarence over the last few weeks.
Family and friends may visit 2 to 4 p.m. Thursday, May 7, 2026, at Lane Funeral Homes, Roberts-Clark Chapel, 180 Garfield Drive NE, Warren. Military honors will follow at 4 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home.
