Joseph E. Newell 1948-2026
FOWLER — Joseph Edward Newell, 78, passed away peacefully on Saturday afternoon, April 4, 2026, at his home with his loving family at his side.
He was born March 28, 1948, in Warren, a son of William R. Sr. and Florence Ladd Newell.
Joe was a 1969 graduate of Mineral Ridge High School and honorably served in the United States Army during the Vietnam War.
For over 40 years, he was an electrician at Republic Steel, WCI, and RG Steel and retired in 2012. He was a member of the Mosquito Bowmen Archery Club.
For over 50 years, and into his 70s, he played baseball and enjoyed traveling with many teams. He also liked to work in his yard and would fix anything for anyone who needed help.
Joe is survived by his loving and caring wife of 53 years, Esther Fay Nickels Newell, whom he married March 31, 1973; two sons, Brian Newell of Gahanna and Kevin (April) Newell of Smyrna, Tennessee; and three grandchildren, Grace, Ava and Sam. He is also survived by his siblings, Billy R. Newell (Patty) of Girard, Joyce Craven of Warren, Emily “Susie” Schulte of Hubbard, Roxanne (Everett) Campbell of Bluford, Illinois, Carol (Tom) Heitman of Warren, William Newell of Florida and Martha Ashburn of South Carolina.
He was preceded in death by his parents; daughter-in-law, Amy Newell; sister, Debbie Bokan; and brother, James Paul Newell Sr.
Honoring his wishes, there are no calling hours or funeral services. The family will have a private celebration of his life in the future.
