Ronald Lee Saffell 1946-2026
GIRARD — Ronald Lee Saffell, 79, passed away peacefully on Sunday, March 22, 2026, at Hospice House, Poland.
Ron was born Aug. 22, 1946, in Salem, a son to Arthur and Eula Riffle Saffell.
Ron was a proud YSU graduate, earning his Bachelor of Arts degree in English and Master of Arts degree in linguistics. He dedicated his career to teaching English and theatrics at Howland High School, where he inspired countless students with his dedication and enthusiasm for language and culture. He also coached boys’ and girls’ tennis and was the drama director there. Retiring in 2007 after 34 years, Ron became a member of the Howland Retired Teachers Association and also met with his former co-workers, always at Panera for coffee and fellowship. After retirement, Ron also taught adult French classes and enjoyed substitute teaching, especially at his grandchildren’s schools.
He loved competitive games of Scrabble, bocce and Jeopardy and was fond of traveling with family and friends. He was always the life of the party, engaging guests in games, showing off his magic tricks or juggling. And of course he was president and founder of his men’s movie club.
He leaves to cherish his memory his wife of 51 years, Michele Masucci Saffell, whom he married Sept. 14, 1974; and his daughters, Andrea (Tim) Moore of Poland and Corinne (Daniel) Simon of Winter Park, Florida. His legacy continues through his grandchildren, Gordon and Monica Moore, and Sienna Simon, who brought him much joy. He also is survived by his nieces, nephews and an abundance of dear friends.
Ron was preceded in death by his father, Arthur; his mother, Eula; his stepfather, Floyd Hoffman; and his sister, Evelyn Myers.
Visitation will be 10 a.m. to noon Wednesday, March 25, 2026, at Blackstone Funeral Home in Girard, with a funeral service to follow at noon.
Ron will be laid to rest in Niles City Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to the American Stroke Association or the CAA Research Program at MGH.
